Why is titanium-clad copper, a powerful combination of metallic materials, the unsung hero of the electrolysis industry?

I. A Classic Industrial Challenge

In many electrolytic processes (such as the extraction of copper, zinc, cobalt, and manganese, or the electroplating industry), a key component is required-the cathode plate. It is responsible for uniformly introducing current into the electrolytic cell, causing metal ions to be reduced and deposited on its surface.

This process places two almost contradictory requirements on the cathode plate:

● Extremely high conductivity: To reduce energy consumption, current conduction must be highly efficient and smooth.

● Excellent corrosion resistance: Electrolytes are typically strong acids, strong alkalis, or strong oxidizing media, creating extremely harsh environments.

So here's the problem:

● Copper is the king of conductivity, but its chemical reactivity means it corrodes and dissolves rapidly in acidic environments, resulting in a very short lifespan.

● Titanium is the benchmark for corrosion resistance, forming a dense oxide film on its surface that resists various corrosive media, earning it the title of "King of Corrosion Resistance." However, its conductivity is much lower than copper's. If pure copper is used, the board will quickly corrode and become unusable; if pure titanium is used, the energy consumption will be unacceptably high. So what's the solution?

II. Titanium-Clad Copper: A Brilliant Solution

As the saying goes, "Nothing is perfect," and a single metal cannot meet the requirements. Engineers came up with a brilliant idea: combining the two to leverage their strengths and compensate for their weaknesses!

Titanium-clad copper, as the name suggests, is a "composite board" with copper as the "core" and a layer of titanium tightly wrapped around it.

You can think of it as a cable:

● The inner copper core: like the metal conductors in a cable, it is responsible for the core task of conductivity, ensuring that current flows through with minimal loss.

● External Titanium Layer: Like the insulating sheath of a cable, it protects the internal copper core, completely isolating it from the harsh electrolyte and preventing corrosion.

Through special explosive bonding, rolling bonding, or explosive-rolling bonding processes, the atoms of titanium and copper are firmly bonded together at the interface, forming a dense, seamless whole.

III. Four Core Advantages of Titanium-Clad Copper:

This "strong combination" structure brings superior performance, with "1+1 > 2":

● Superior Conductivity: The internal copper core provides an excellent conductive path, resulting in significantly lower power loss compared to pure titanium cathode plates, directly saving companies substantial electricity costs.

● Exceptional Corrosion Resistance: The external titanium layer directly faces the corrosive medium, exhibiting extremely high stability and a service life several times or even tens of times longer than pure copper cathode plates, greatly reducing equipment replacement and maintenance costs.

● High Mechanical Strength and Lightweight: Titanium itself has high strength, making the composite plate structurally robust and resistant to deformation. Furthermore, compared to solid copper plates, it can be made thinner and lighter, facilitating handling and transportation.

● Excellent Product Adhesion and Peelability: During metal electrolysis, the deposited metal (such as electrolytic copper) adheres uniformly to the titanium surface, and after removal from the electrolysis tank, it can be relatively easily peeled off, resulting in a high-purity product with a high powder yield (or plate yield).

IV. Main Application Scenarios

Titanium-clad copper material is a "core key material" in the following fields: · Hydrometallurgy: Electrolytic extraction and refining of non-ferrous metals such as copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt, and manganese.

● Electroplating Industry: As an insoluble anode or special cathode plate.

● Environmental Protection: Recovery devices for precious metals in electronic wastewater and electroplating wastewater.

● Chlor-alkali Industry: Electrode material in certain specific stages.

V. Summary

Titanium-clad copper, this seemingly simple "sandwich" structure, perfectly solves the long-standing contradiction in the industrial field between conductivity and corrosion resistance. Although not the final product, as the "backbone" of the production process, it has made significant contributions to energy conservation, cost reduction, and efficiency improvement in modern industry due to its high efficiency, long lifespan, and stability.

It perfectly embodies the wisdom of engineering: when one material cannot meet all requirements, ingenious composites create new materials with superior performance. This is a microcosm of how technological progress drives industrial development.
